You can get more detail from this blog post I wrote about the lessons I’ve learned from Loki. Their lessons are hard and often would often have you confronting your shadow self every now and then. They are benevolent, but only to those who deserve it and have worked for it. I do admit that they are quite on point on this. When asking on how I could easily describe them, they gave me these keywords. My Own Takeaways from Rökkatru Loki & his children by Aud Koch Furthermore, we should not discount how Christianity swept over Europe and destroyed a lot of evidence of pagan worship. If we compare this to civilizations with robust information about deity worship like the Egyptians, there’s a huge difference. Animal bones, blood, tree bark or even human flesh (if they did tattoo themselves), these easily decompose and leave barely any trace behind. Observing how the Ancient Vikings were nomadic by nature, it is possible that majority, if not all, of their tools of worship were made out of material that can easily decay and be returned to the earth. I personally believe that the main argument of “the Rokkatru does not exist due to evidence of their worship does not survive today” is a rather weak argument. I am also highly appreciative of his transparency of how Christianity inserted the dualistic nature of the stories that we know and are familiar of today. I personally think academically he has done quite well in pointing out certain aspects that had affected the interpretation of the Norse gods. I’ve linked to his YouTube video for you to see. From what I’ve read, some Thursatru also wish for the coming of Ragnarok.Īrith Härger manages to go in-depth on who the Rokkatru are with some insights on how it is as the “left-hand path” in Heathenry. However, Thursatru is the grittier aspect especially as they believe that the spirits and deities they work with are pure evil and chaotic. The Rökkatru are much like the Astaru and the Vanatru except they have included the Rokkr in their worship. Now there is a difference between the Rökkatru and Thursatru. In a way, you can also refer to them as underworld gods as they do have ties with the underworld itself.Īs a religion, Rökkatru was first coined by Abby Helasdottir, which meant “true to the Rokkr”, and subsequently used by Raven Kaldera and his group, Northern Paganism. These deities are often the one that symbolize, or rule, the “negative” aspects such as chaos and death. In short, the deities that comprise the Rökkatru are the ones cast away and painted in a negative light by dualistic means. Majority of the deities honored within Rökkatru are jötun. Though these deities are seen to be the standout ones for this pantheon, others have also been included such as Sigyn, Skadi, Surtr, the Norns, and etc. At least that’s the extremely condensed version goes. Jormungandr was casted out to the sea only to grow big and encircle the world and Hel was sent off to rule the dead in Helheim. They bound Fenrir as he grew too big and strong for them. When the Æsir discovered this, they knew the end was coming. Loki, the Norse trickster god, lies with the jötun Angrboda who then gives birth to three “monstrous children”. Angrboda.ĭo all of these names sound familiar? If you’re familiar with the general telling of the Eddas, you would know that they all play a role in Ragnarök. Who Are The Rökkr? Loki Mural Sketch by perpetualperversions After all, it is a promise I’ve made to my deity, and I will see this through. I cannot guarantee that I will be able to cover every single aspect of the Rokkatru, or Rokkr for some, but I will do my best. However, I acknowledge that they were my initial introduction to the term Rokkatru and have then researched, developed, and refined my own beliefs about these deities. I am aware of the author’s issues and I do not agree with what they’ve done. I would also would like to inform that I do not fully share beliefs with certain authors that I will quote, such as Raven Kaldera. For more information about Gnosis, I will be linking a couple of sources at the end of this article. I will also be pitching my own ideas so this post will be a mix of UPG (Unverified Personal Gnosis), VPG (Verified Personal Gnosis) and possibly SPG (Shared Personal Gnosis). Certain information I will be discussing here will hail from various sources. Just a quick author’s note before we dive into the topic.Īllow me to speak for transparency.
